- [Narrator] How we come to an agreement depends very much on our culture. According to "The Culture Map" by Erin Meyer, we can reach agreement through consensus or through hierarchy. Let me explain each of these with an example. I was running a public speaking workshop in Norway. It was held at a beautiful resort by a frozen lake. The participants were relaxed, informal, and friendly. I started the session with some team building exercises. The groups faced a hypothetical life or death dilemma. There were many different potential solutions to the problem, and they had to reach an agreement on the appropriate plan of action. As I observed their interactions, it was impossible for me to assess who were the senior members of the team and who were the junior members. Everybody spoke as an equal, from the youngest to the oldest, from the least experienced to the most experienced.
